  • Janet currently serves as President of the Society for Conservation GIS (SCGIS). She also volunteers on the SCGIS Finance Committee and Domestic Chapters Committee. In addition, she co-leads the Washington, DC chapter of SCGIS. Janet is an Associate Research Professor at the University of Maryland Department of Geographical Sciences. Her research interests lie in the use of GIS and remote sensing for biological conservation, land use planning and food security applications. She works primarily in Africa, mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on a conservation and land use planning project with the African Wildlife Foundation. For this, she assists with the development of scenario-based models of land cover/land use change, provides capacity building for participatory mapping activities with local communities, and develops conservation prioritization models to help identify key areas for the protection of the bonobo, a great ape endemic to the DRC. In addition, she also contributes to a NASA-funded project focused on building a chimpanzee habitat monitoring system across Central and West Africa¬†with the Jane Goodall Institute.¬†
