  •    Member Profile

  • I work at the University of Maryland Department of Geographical Sciences. My research interests lie in the use of GIS and remote sensing for biological conservation, land use planning and food security applications. I work primarily in Africa, mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) where I'm involved in a conservation and land use planning project with the African Wildlife Foundation. For this, I assist with the development of scenario-based models of land cover/land use change, provide capacity building for participatory mapping activities with local communities, and develop conservation prioritization models to help identify key areas for the protection of the bonobo, a great ape endemic to the DRC. I'm also working on a NASA-funded project focused on building a chimpanzee habitat monitoring system across Central and West Africa with the Jane Goodall Institute.

I have been a long-time member of SCGIS and now serve on the Board.  I also co-chair the Washington, DC chapter of SCGIS, which meets periodically for professional networking events.
