Trends.Earth - an innovative toolbox for tracking land change and degradation

July 15, 2018 9:00am

Venue: Asilomar Conference Center, Monterey CA

Lead(s): Max Wright (Visit Website)

Fees: Student $80   Member $90  Non-Member $125

The purpose of this training will be to build capacity in the Trends.Earth platform and its applications. Trends.Earth is an innovative toolbox that combines desktop analysis in QGIS with cloud processing through the Google Earth Engine (GEE) to understand landcover change dynamic and degradation.  Land degradation refers to a reduction in biological productivity over time, and is a critical component to understanding sustainability and natural resources management. The training will provide a theoretical context to understand land degradation and how remote sensing data can be used to address research questions related to landcover trends.

This workshop will be a tour of the wide range of data visualization and cartographic options now available in QGIS. QGIS has seen remarkable growth in these areas in recent years. During the day you will learn many techniques unique to QGIS such as: use of inverted polygon shapeburst fills, blending modes, live layer effects, virtual layers, and geometry generator symbol layers. We will begin with layer styling, labeling and basic map layout (including atlases). We will then move into more advanced topics. Tips and tricks will be covered as we move through the day. If you want to take your map creation skills to the next level - this is the perfect workshop for you!

Capturing Field Observations with Survey123 for ArcGIS

July 15, 2018 9:00am

Venue: Asilomar Conference Center, Monterey CA

Lead(s): Ismael Chivite (Visit Website)

Fees: Student $80   Member $90  Non-Member $125

In this full-day hands-on session you will learn how to leverage Survey123 to capture, map and analyze field observations. Survey123 is a geo-enabled form-based solution for field data capture.  Survey123 forms can help you support crowd-sourcing and citizen science projects, because forms can be shared publicly. Survey123 can also work with secured services to protect sensitive data.  Survey123 forms can be completed from a simple web browser, and they can be used from the Survey123 iOS and Android mobile app. How to use Survey123 for  offline data collection, public web surveys, support for high accuracy GNSS receivers and laser measurement tools are other topics that we will discuss in this seminar.  Bring your mobile device (iOS or Android) because we will do hands-on exercises!
