Thank you to everyone who contributed to and attended the 1st ever SCGIS Virtual Conference!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the corporeal version of the SCGIS Annual Conference, which was planned to be held at Asilomar, in California, was cancelled for the first time in 23 years.
The 1st SCGIS Virtual Conference was born of a wish to bring value, connect members in these isolating times, and provide a platform for our community to share the important conservation work they are doing. We are humbled by the response we received from spatial conservationists offering to share their time and knowledge. An advantage of a virtual conference was that for the first time, we had the opportunity to make the conference available for everyone (with an internet connection) in our community to attend.
The conference ran from July 20 - Sept 3, 2020 and included 8 intensive skills workshops, and 18 sessions offered free to members and non-members alike. These sessions included panel discussions, organizational sessions, community talks, and SCGIS chapter sessions representing one US and 11 International SCGIS Chapters! Surveyed participants joined from at least 32 countries.

The breadth of conference offerings and robust attendance is a testament to the expertise, generosity, and strength of the SCGIS community. We are grateful to everyone who donated their time to make this Conference possible, as well as all those who attended to support their colleagues and friends. We are stronger together. The power of real time, inclusive global conversations was both shocking and awe inspiring in its richness. With your help, we will continue to foster these experiences moving forward.

We kicked off the conference series on July 20th with our Welcome and Annual Membership Meeting. Our president, Janet Nackoney along with other SCGIS leaders Vivienne Sclater, Charles Convis, and Nathan Walker gave an introduction to SCGIS, reviewed the benefits of membership, and presented highlights from the past year. The video recording posted above is open to the public and we encourage you to watch!
